Gurney Flaps or Wickerbill

Post by BDA »

I installed and tested a 1” Gurney flap on the flaps and on my extended wing tips.
Wind was calm.
Take off was faster that without.
Slow flight was much flatter. Nose was lower.
It was not as slow as without.
Nasty stall break.

Normally my plane does not have a real break at stall, it just sinks faster and faster.
With these Gurney flaps it broke clean and the nose just fell out. I was only a few feet off the runway, but it caught me by suprise.
I took off again and tried again, this time the left wing dropped out and I had a nasty landing. That was enough for me.
I am pretty sure I used too large an angle, so there is still testing to be done here, but I am done with these for now.
