I have half fuel and 50# of sand in bagage for now, not trying for short at all yet, but, there was a breeze right down the runway yesterday and I was off before the throttle was in or stick pulled back.

The big wing is amazing.

Climbed out at 30 indicated, was at 1,000 feet by first ramp.
Nice...sounds sweet...cant wait to see some video !

So I have been really impressed with this planes performance, but, I had my panel rpm configured wrong, so I did not know what my real rpms were.

I got it figured out yesterday and I was only turning 2,000 rpm … I had the prop pitched wrong.

Whirlwind said 13* so that is what it is now. So now I am getting 2,450... Wow, that's a lot more pull.

I am addicted to the power and the climb rate.

And I saw 100knts today in level flight, never expected that.

I don't think I will be able to fly anything else now.

Performance report

I was aying at the airport last night, windsock hanging and still.

Stand on the breaks, hold the stick back, full throttle, relax back presure on stick, and rotate.

This is without flaps and WITH 120#s of ballast. I have been flying with the ballast from the beginning to keep cg in the middle just out of precaution, new tail design and all.

I havent marked or measured the takeoff roll, it pretty short, i think I can take off and land and still make the first taxi way turn.

I need a lot more practice, stick forces are high, prop keeps blowing the right inboard slat in, and it leaves the ground right wheel first, so I am pretty busy at that point.

I mentioned that the slats are coming out at a very slow speed, so I am hesitant to fly much of the patern w slats out, plus it backs everyone else up. But as I get better at managing speed and decent, the landings are just so easy, and slow, hard to screw up. Not that I havent of course, these shocks are AWESOME FOR SCREW UPS.

Oh, and it is possible to turn base at the end of the runway and turn out at the first taxi way, the first one, at the numbers.

Flew it home from the airport for the first time today!!

Came in over the trees and plopped it down, then taxied allllllll the way down to the other end to park.

Sure seems alot longer than it used to with the Cherokee.

The wife said “Whoa! You only rolled 10 feet!”
Hahaha, was at least twice that.

Yeah, videos don’t seem to post, and it does not appear the YouTube embedded video works either, unless it has changed recently.

Easiest thing to do is put it on YouTube and post the URL link here.

Flight report

Went for a cruise yesterday
2,200 rpm at 80 knts at 500ft (low ceiling)

Slow and short landings

2nd half of downwind at 50 knots, flaps at 1/3

Base 50 knts full flaps 1400 rpm

50 knts is nose down enough for full view of runway and forward flight path

300 ft before touchdown 40 knts,

100 ft before touchdown 30 knts, add power after nose comes up, and drag increases.

50 ft, 15-1600 rpm, stick all the way back, rudder is very busy, 30knts, deck angle is rediculous

Tailwheel touches, main wheels 5-6’ off the ground, add power to soften the plop, alot of power.

Touchdown at 25 knts or so, pull throttle just as the wheels touch.

The roll out is shorter if you dont add throttle as the tailwheel touches, but the plop is exciting.
Roll after power is about 20’ more.

Short take off

Hold brakes
Full power, stick back
Release brakes, stick forward
As soon as stick hits the forward stop the tail comes up
As soon as tail starts to come up Full flaps, full back stick,
65’ no wind at 1,450#

Have I said how much I LOVE THE BIGGER WING AND TAIL?!!

I was finally able to change my panel to read in mph instead of knots today.

Touch down is still 25 mph

Flew all the way down the runway at 30 mph at 1900 rpm

2,200 rpm cruise at 1,000 feet is 90mph

2,500 rpm cruise is 110mph

This is with my whirlwind prop set for middle of the road, I hesitate to go with any more pitch because I have hit VNE (120) twice now while decending slightly.

Maybe when I get a little more comfortable with it I will pitch for 115 cruise, just for fun :)

More slow flight today

I was seeing 26 mph (on gps) sustained flight in ground effect the entire length of the runway.
Lots of rpm and lots of ruder. This is not for beginners, lots of throttle = LOTS of P factor at a VERY HIGH angle of attack. It is REALLY squirly. But fun too!!
When the tail wheel hits at that attitude it takes almost full throttle to keep the nose from slamming too hard.

I found my take-offs are much shorter if - as soon as tail wheel breaks ground I pull full flaps, then immediatly full back stick.
Its like someone grabs me by the back of my shirt collar and jerks me off the ground. THE MOST INCREDIBLE FEELING.

Climb out at 60 is incredible, 50 is even better. Both are at 2450 rpm ( full throttle) This thing is too good to be true.

I am going to do some demonstrated fuel burn tests next.
