Wing extensions

Post by BDA »

Just curious if there is anyone else out there with wing extensions???

I have almost 200 hours with mine on, and no problems.

In my opinion they should be required with any XL fuselage to keep the wing loading the same as the smaller SuperStol.

I expected to suffer a cruise speed penalty with 4’ more wing out there. But I am cruising up to 115mph depending on prop adjustment so not much if any. Probably fuel burn I am. But I can still throttle back and get 6-7 gph if I need to.

I also expected a roll rate penalty, but everyone that flys it says the controls are suprisingly light and fast. Ailerons also extended almost 1 foot. Slats almost 2’.

So, if you are building an XL, think about it.

Still curious if anyone else has any other experience…

I had thought about making a removable plug-in extension. I had actually thought about making them double-duty as 3-5 gallon tip tanks.

I’m still thinking about building a new-design all-metal wing, but right now I’m just trying to keep my job and hoard as much money as I can.

When Rob won at Valdez, he had 3’ extensions that were removable.
The only time they were on was for competition. He said it was because there was too much flex or loosness with any bumpy air.

That is why I made mine permanent with Hysol and bolts.
