Polishing actually Dulls it....? ( Nickle tone ? )
But it blends it better .
I went over the whole cover...
Then concentrated on killing/polishing the swirls that were by hand...
Maybe I should have used a scuff material instead of sand paper.
I'm still debating whether to paint it flat black.
The design would still be seen through the paint.
( and could be removed with lacquer thinner )
....Hmmmm, second thought...The black might bring back Fab Scars.
I think it needs the Dazzle to camouflage this piece...
or a layer of Carbon Fiber...I saw One yd...6o inches wide...$48 bucks
I think my West System Epoxy would work with it ?

That sounds like later or never....

I'm working on the chaffing material and wool seal now.
I need more of the Blue chaffing material ( Jo Anne Fabric )
.
Then I can finally move on to other things needed to START the engine.
I think I'll be getting the RPM cable next.
Oil pressure gauge, fittings and tubing should be local auto store.

Hey Guys ,
It has a good seal ... The wool does a good job of filling uneven gaps .( as it breathes , it will clog and seal better )
I bought 10 ft of the Blue chaffing material for $12 bucks at Jo-ann fabric .
( Aircraft chaffing stuff ...$36 bucks and higher , and it only comes in white ...)
.
The stuff is a woven cotton ...flat ribbon ...bumpy.
To make the holes in it , I use a nail heated with a propane torch .
After I made the hole in the cotton weave , I dabbed it with some polytak...
This should slow down Fraying...

Hey Guys ,
Here's the cover after the chaffing / Seal has been glued .
I'll leave it like this for drying .

All of the Dzus fasteners have good locking tension .
(That's something I will need to check after heating and cooling )

I still have to route the oil breather ...
and spark plug wires / guides
.
Some of the pictures are the same angle as previous pics.
Compared to them , ..... what scars ?
.
Polishing the swirls in this area will also help in wiping OFF the grime ...

Hey Guys ,
My plan was to fasten the spark plug wires to the flange ..
But in the process of trying to shield the wires from rubbing , I think they are ok.

I don't know how well this plastic will hold up to the heat ...another thing to watch .
I was thinking wool would be good as a wrap ...weave.
Hmmm...

Yeah , I looked up this part too many times...
My fault it was long ...
.
At the bottom it sez measure the cable from tip to tip...
But that is for ordering the cable only ....not the assy.

Hey Guys ,

Yeah the cable is a pinch long ...That's not why I moved the instruments .
.
The Tach cable was fighting the cross tube ...
I didn't like the quick bend ,
Moving the gauge to the other side...instead of tilting ...I will still slip a nylon washer for slight tilt .
.
The nylon hardware will be dyed or sprayed black .
The top picture , the cable disappears under the encoder (wrapped with wool).
.
The instruments didn't just move to the other side easy ....Two did.
The other two needed more taken off , lower left corner on both...
So to go BACK ...there's just more space .
.
I could have moved only the RPM Gauge ...
This is easier from a maintenance point of view ...

Hanging the Oil cooler in place told me the strongest way to mount it ...
As I put it where it was out of the way , it got closer to the firewall .
Two Brackets off the firewall would be strong ,light and simple
I would control the incoming air at the SCAT ...some round butterfly flap.

But as I was thinking of SCAT from the Plenum...I might move the cooler ,
(I'd rather not put a hole in the Plenum)
Then use SCAT coming from the air scoop on the lower cowl.
I need to have an area with a cooling draft/flow , and make sure that the oil will drain ...
Lower and more centered looks good , It might need a heat shield to deflect the hot exhaust pipes .
I'll need to hang the oil cooler in place like I did here .
Another thing I need to watch is how the oil lines will run to the cooler from the engine .

So I had an idea of the angle ...

So I drew a paper mounting bracket ...
hmmm, changed the angle and drew it again ...

Finally I started making more room .
and cleaning up the spark plug wires helps .
.
plus I have been looking at hangers like the fuel tank straps .
for center support for the tank , but mostly for a solid mount for my center controls ,
and it will protect the center fuel line and fittings from clumsy feet
.
If I have to remove the tank ...there will be plenty of reasons
.

I put the Primer lines back in place .
One area needed clearance .
.
Later, I took off the part and gave it better clearance.
.
I timed myself when I took off the Plenum cover.... One minute 15 sec...
I was hoping for something closer to 30 sec... Maybe next time I will try harder.

WELCOME BACK.....

It's been about 8 months that the forum has had troubles , but we're back even stronger.
It now has a new owner...and someone who knows this system (Steve) has worked out the bugs
.
All that's needed now is to "catch up" with my building log.

As you can see , I had to modify my Oil Cooler "Housing" for better clearance from the motor mount tubes.
Since I had a lot of work in the piece , easiest way was to just cut , overlap and rivet.
With the weight the oil cooler will have when full , this feels stronger for those bumpy grass strips.
There is still plenty space bettween it and the firewall... Especially if air is forced thru the cooler.
For now... This open air will be good enough for engine start... I'll look at temperatures from there.
(The picture above shows the method I use to "JUMP" a flange in order to squeeze a rivet with my 10" Knipex)

Hey Guys,
Going over the parts.
I found a picture gauge printed in an Aircraft Spruce catalog.
But JEGS prices are much better.
NHRA approved, that sounds good too.

I'm ordering enough to change my fuel line also ( From Firewall to Carb )
At the firewall I'm reducing the line from #8AN to #6AN
.
Problem is.... I have to wait...The driveway is between Winter and Spring...Soggy
Oh... and it's a half mile long.
.
Here's a list of stuff that SHOULD take care of this plumbing.
The lower oil line will have a "T" for draining the oil ( like original lines )
.
Notice the goofy lay-out drawings on the list... THEY HELP.
.
This time I will try to take pictures making the Custom Hoses...
They are Simple and I think they look great.
The price comes in cheaper than having the hoses made...way cheaper
.
