Helmets
I have decided that a helmet is a must have. Steve Henry mentioned Protec as an option. Not sure how that integrates with headset. Sky cowboy has headset integration but not cheap. Does anyone have a recomendation?

Re: Helmets
If you’re going for a helmet, I’m not sure “cheap” is what you should be concerned with.
I was considering an HGU-55, about $1200 plus options for audio.

Re: Helmets
Regarding helmets, I distinctly remember an ad campaign years ago by Bell Helmets. They got much criticism for being expensive equipment. Their ad page showed simply a picture of a Bell Helmet, and it read
"If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet." That has stuck with me for the probably 30 years since I saw it. Quite profound advertising.

Re: Helmets
I just happen to have an HGU-55 that I’ve civilianized. I plan on using that, but that helmet Dane posted looks assume! Look into it. It looks like it would be much more comfortable...

Re: Helmets
I'm interested in the Sky Cowboy systems because they use Team Wendy helmets built for SAR use. The helmets themselves are $399 including headset adapters, and they can be used with several different headsets.
We're planning to use Bose A20s or whatever Bose is offering this coming Spring. Bose recently upgraded their Quiet Comfort line, so I expect their aviation headsets will also get an upgrade soon.
Check the helmets out at https://www.skycowboysupplyco.com/.

Re: Helmets
I use a David Clarke Helmut and ordered a snap on sun visor peak after. I installed my Bose headset in it, I did have to modify the one ear cup on the Helmut. Not too heavy, never hot, definitely comfortable.

Who knows the difference between the $1200 and the $400?

Re: Helmets
If you're referring to the Sky Cowboy $400 helmet, it's the helmet and adapters, but you still have to add your own headset, which you partially disassemble and install in the helmet. No soldering required. I think it's a nice combination of a really good helmet and whatever really good noise canceling we choose.EchoWhiskey wrote:Who knows the difference between the $1200 and the $400?

Re: Helmets
The sky cowboy helmets are lexan-polycarbonate while an HGU-55 is Kevlar. HGUs have built-in earcups, and (not generally necessary for Highlanders) accommodations for oxygen masks, visors, etc. The sky cowboy helmets are most likely quite adequate for our purposes here.

Re: Helmets
The PT Bravo description makes it seem more like a place to attach stuff than a way to protect the skull. One line in the features is alarming: "Helmet Plastic Can Be Reshaped with a Hammer If Crushed Flat".

Re: Helmets
They are very strong and high quality.
I totaly agree w the best helmet you can afford idea, I use a high dollar carbon fiber helmet for riding snowmachine.
But
The best helmet you will WEAR is just as important.
My carbon fiber helmet is too big and bulky for an airplane.
And I havnt found another besides this one that I WILL wear.
