Portable VISE

Post by planecrazzzy »

'
This is my Portable Vise...
I made it about thirty years ago.
The Legs fold in like a tri-pod...

It's VERY HANDY...

I can move it easy... and Also make a table out of it.
I have Aluminum and steel table tops for it.

It's easy to move it somewhere to make a mess.
Or a clean area to work on in the shop...

Oh yeah... and it's a Vise.

PS It's a 4" vise

pix of vise

It has a Plate welded on it for a grounding clamp
It gives Welding a Solid Ground , even at higher amps .

AS I was grinding Aluminum with a carbide bit...
Taking it outside, saves a lot of clean-up

The one I use in the shop is heavier.
It's a 6 inch Vise
It's still nice to be able to move it.
I tip it and roll it...

The Base is THICK... it's stable.

and I have a Table top for it also.

As I was moving the Vise, I remembered that I never took a picture of it folded up ...
.
So I checked it to see if the table top was tight , flipped it over
and used it to hold the vise for a picture ..
.
These legs have an over caming lock motion .(unlike a floppy pipe vise)
.
When I first made these for a plain grinding base plate ....The legs were held by chain .
That worked in the gravel, out by the equipment .
But on hard surfaces ...this wasn't working , it moved too much ,twisted or walked .
Now ...when the legs are in position , the center of the linkage needs to be pressed until it over cams and locks the legs.
Then , every thing moves as one .

If you're going to copy this for your own use ...pay attention to the clearance .
.
