(23) Floor Pans ( Mike )
Hey Guys,
I'm making my floor pans out of .032 - 6061 Aluminum....
That's what my other plane has... seems to be fine.
The reason I started where I did was because I had a piece close to size...
.
In order to keep it "one piece" , I need to "bow" it to get it into position....
Then it springs back into shape.
Something I didn't realize at first.... The Stick Control rubbed it....
I used my English Wheel to shape it....
I got it to clear without distorting the rest of the pan ( Much )
I'm still "new" to the English Wheel.... But I get good use out of it.
.
Here's pix of the rear Floor Pan
.
Gotta Fly...

Re: Foor Pans
Hey Guys ,
Just a few details about the rear pan...
It's held in place with 6 screws... One on each side of the stick...
and two along each Door...
The Aluminum pan was counter sunk at each screw hole...
The screws are Flush ( Like the other Aluminum panels )
.
.
The Front edge was ran through the "Beader"....
and a lip was formed that will let the front pan "overlap" the rear pan
with a smooth transition...
I'm hoping this lip will help the front pan "hold" the rear pan secure...
This way there are less "tabs" to weld on...
"IF" this isn't strong enough.... Two suggestions...
One... Use the piece as a pattern to cut it out of thicker material....
Or sandwich another thin piece in the weak area.... ( Underneath the pan )
Myself... I think it's plenty strong. ( and LIGHT )

Re: Foor Pans
Hey Guys,
Moving on to the Forward Floor Pan....
I looked at this several ways.... First of all...
My Rudder Pedal Assy is adjustable.... I need access to the Bushing Mounts
I looked at one main center pan , with a small cover plate on each side....
Instead... I decided to make it in two pieces... a left and right...
with a beaded lip and inserts to hold them together at center
The right side looks simple.... The left side is a mess....
Actually... I needed to make paper mock-ups for this area....
.
Gotta Fly...
.
.
PS Because the Brake Cylinders need access to the mounting bolt...
I might need a cover panel in this area....
Also... The "V" in the rudder assy will hit the pan... more English Wheel work.

Re: Floor Pans
Hey Guys,
The left pattern mock-up got so patched up , After I got it close...
I re-traced it onto another fresh paper and checked the fit ....
Looks like they are close enough to transfer to Aluminum...

Re: Floor Pans
Hey Guys,
This is looking pretty close ...
I still need to fine tune some of the clearance...
But I'll need to secure the pans "in place" before I do that.

Re: Floor Pans
Hey Guys,
I've got the tabs in place and the pans are countersunk...
After..., I put inserts between the two forward pans ( 8-32 )
It seems plenty strong for 1/32" aluminum ( 6061 )
I'll need to wait and see how it "Wears"...
.
Next I'll be laying out lines to put Engine Turning designs on them.

Mike,
The URL "link" you gave above to the engine turning pdf is broken. Do you have it saved somewhere else that works? I'm thinking About trying it on my panel but have never tried it before.

Hi Eric,
It's in the Files at the Buttercup/STOL forum...
I copied the link... See if this works ...NO Joy , You need to open the file at Buttercup/STOL

That link works fine. Found more info in the fuel tank and firewall sections. Looks like you used a medium grit scuff pad on the die grinder.

Brown pad is ruffer than medium...
Use it lightly until it's broke in...
important part is the washer...
it helps the pad last with consistency

PS Practice on scrap.... and pleeze show some pix
