Sand Blasting Booth - Modified
.
I bought a Blasting Cabinet from HF.... Seems to be worth the money...
Search for discount coupons and it's a real deal.
I'll post some pictures of the assembly... yes , it's all in PIECES !!!!
.
Stickers not included...
The Cabinet comes with a Light inside...
and a place to hook up a Vacuum hose.
I ended up putting it on a piece of plywood and 4 wheels...
Something else I modified right away... I put "insert nuts" in place
of the top glass frame hardware... The nuts stay in place if I need to replace
the plastic or glass after it gets "pitted" from blasting...
.
Gotta Fly...

Re: Blasting Cabinet
Modification on the screening of the blasting material...
At first, When I saw the lower flap on the Hopper... I figured it was
for changing "medium" or emptying it when not in use... ( Dry ? )
anywho, I was reading "Reviews" at HF... and I noticed a lot of people talking about
dumping the material to clean it.... Or others , talking about how to "Unclog" the gun...
That's when I thought about it... at times , your going to get flakes of crap "off" whatever
your blasting... it's gonna fall into your sand/medium... and get caught in your
pick-up tube or jam the nozzle ...
So I put window screen under their screen... it filters it at the surface...
Later , I will add a HEAVIER screen on top... I heard complaints their
main screen was too weak.... I'll be careful til then.
Here's a couple pictures of the screens

Re: Blasting Cabinet
More Modifications...
The cabinet is pretty good size... But blasting a long tube ain't gonna happen...
I thought about this modification at the beginning.... But I thought I'd wait...
As it is... I'm glad I waited... To see WHERE the holes should be...
It was easier to see with my hands in the gloves , and holding the blaster...
This let me know I needed it further towards the back than I would have thought...
Just more room to operate...
I figure a hole 4 inches was going to be big enough... Tubes will fit easy...
and I figured this would allow the lift struts to fit also.
.
Here's some pictures of lay-out and the process of cutting the holes ...
After getting a general area to cut the holes... I looked at the plastic door to cut
it without weakening it...
After I cut and cleaned the hole... I added some expanding foam...
This wasn't for strength... the door is strong... it's to keep sand from filling into it...
I used a strip of cardboard to minimize the foam used...
I have to let it dry before I trim it clean.

Re: Blasting Cabinet
I used some tape to hold the foam in place while it dried...
and I laid out the opposite side...
I used a drill to cut the 4 inch holes on both sides...
Then cleaned them up with a drum sander...
Hey... it's what I had at the time...
Also... Cutting the metal this way didn't burn the paint...
and it ended up a clean finish.

Re: Blasting Cabinet
As you can see... The Lift strut is "Through" the Blasting Cabinet...
I covered the edge of the metal to prevent scratching on the tubes being blasted...
I used a plastic material I have saved from work , used to protect Band Saw Blades...
They put it over the teeth on the bigger blades... I've used this stuff on several things...
in the last picture... you can see I used it on my Roller Cover , it's edge...
You "could" use a plastic tube... Just slice it...
.
Gotta Fly...
.
. PS I'll just add , When I'm blasting long parts... I'll just cover the hole area with rags...
maybe wrap them around the tube... to get a good seal so the vacuum cleaner can do it's job
of clearing the dust in the air for better visibility...

Re: Blasting Cabinet - Modified
Ok... next day... The Foam is dry...
I trimmed it... and put some Duct tape on it...
It doesn't have to be pretty... as long as it's functional...
Now I just need to make plugs to fit both holes...
That shouldn't be to hard to find or make...
either a can or whittle on some wood...

Hmmm,
Right Diameter...too long...
Looks like a Can might be the answer...

Re: Blasting Cabinet - Modified
Ok... Finishing up this Mod...
I found stuff to Cap Off the Holes...
They fit good... Suction is being used during operation...
So they don't need to be real tight...
I used a couple plastic lids...
and the same pieces that were cut out , are used like big washers.
I sandwiched "Foam" in between...
The red helps "Blend" with the cabinet...
and the other side "Blends" after painting it with Black "Wrinkle Paint"
.
Here's pictures of the Plugs.
I have thick foam where the Door is Thick,
and a thinner foam for the other side panel...

Re: Blasting Cabinet - Modified
Hey Guys,
Hmmm, What to do with this BULKY box in the Shop...
Well , after staring at it... I thought it was shaped like a "print" station...
and since my print holder from my other shop wasn't set up yet...
.
(see my "Trick" print holder of past)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsLD46hnM6M
I decided to convert my Stainless Sheet metal w/lip to fit the Cabinet...
Pretty easy after I thought about it... I took off the Hinges...
and used those holes to screw a board on it... Done.
Now, the cabinet is used as a print station... and the prints keep the Dust off the
top of the cabinet...
.
Gotta Fly...
.
PS Plus , I had already put the Blasting Cabinet on a Board with Wheels...
It gives me a Lower Shelf and... it rolls out of the way...or "out" during Blasting...
