Becker Transponder not transmitting Mode C

I have a Becker 4401 transponder that has stopped transmitting Mode C altitude data. It is fed by a Dynon D180 EFIS via a Dynon serial to parrellel gray code converter. It has worked fine for 4 years. Looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot this. I want to avoid removing the transponder (not an easy job) and sending it out to be tested only to find the problem is the converter or the encoder embedded in the EFIS.
