Fluting tool - Homemade

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,

I made a different tool for rolling tubes and Piper channel...

But still need one of those Fluting tools once in a while...

I tried buying one locally.... But they weren't what I needed...

So I looked at Aircraft Tools.... and looked at how others have built them...

OK... Lemme Splain,

First... I had a piece of crap tool that I probably saved for just this occasion...

It worked... But it could be better.... OK... it was Crap !

Second... I had repaired a Vise Grip I found 30 years ago... and it was perfect for this Mod.

A little welding on it and I had a flat surface to mount the round stock...

Eyeball engineering... I spaced the round stock and welded it... Was I done already ?

It looked like the other Home built Flutters...

PS Something I like about this one over my first...
This one can be "Set"... and the same pressure is applied to each crimp... Consistency

OK... Lemme Splain Summo...
.
Here's how it worked....

Hmmm, It works great... But I don't like that "Lump" in the crimp...

Something I thought about before welding on the round stock...( Stainless Steel )

was "Tapering" all three pieces before welding...

But I didn't see anybody else had that... I thought maybe that would be Overkill...

I'm gonna have to experiment...

OK... Let's test out some tapering ...

Now the tool goes into the area "deeper"...

and it doesn't have that nasty "Bump" at each crimp...

The grinding / Taper could have been better if I did it BEFORE welding...

But the end results are mainly what I'm looking for...

Just a note... The hump/bump that the flutter was originally producing

might have been fine for some things...

But I'm using this on my "Stringers"... and those Bumps might show.

Here's the Crimps side by side...

Buy a cheap pair of Vise Grips and Tapper the rods first...
