(02) Ordering Wood for Wings ( Mike )

Post by planecrazzzy »

I was checking the new Aircraft Spruce catolog prices....They have a "spruce kit" , The price "JUMPED" 1,000 bucks this year.

I wrote them and asked if this was a "Typo" , they said , no .....

Later , I started pricing some of the material per foot..... it didn't look like it was that expensive , So I priced ALL the wood for

the Wings , The Spruce, Mahogany plywood, Birch plywood....and "ALL" the wood was cheaper than what they said the spruce

kit cost  ( From the same Company - ACS&S )

I won't bother trying to explain it to them anymore, I tried enough...

The Spruce Kit is priced at $1,628.33

I priced "ALL" the wood at $1,435.42

I'll be ordering the wood after I recover from Christmas spending...

ordering wood

Post by rx7tailwind »

I'm not sure if this is too late, but...consider ordering wood from Wicks instead of AS. The people at Wicks were so much more knowledgeable and accomodating. I ordered wood for spars, etc. it all came in perfect order. I thought it also was cheaper. Good luck.

I have checked all my wood with the Wicks catolog.....I'll be ordering it from them...not only was it cheaper...
Their closer to me....So shipping should be a little cheaper too....

I was ready to order tommorow.....But I'm gonna delay it .....I'm gonna buy a Harley and I'll need the extra $1,300 that I was going to spend on the wood.....

Waiting for the "tree" to grow

Finally......
I got a message from ACS , that my wood is being shipped...

lets see....Ordered on 9/27 ......Shipped on 10/25    ( that's one "slow" boat )

Good news was....I got to "pile-on" other stuff on the order for the same shipping price as the wood ( S&H $135 )

So I ordered some West Systems Epoxy ( and the pumps for measuring the stuff )

Also I ordered a 4x8 sheet of Lexan....( now there's a bargin , free shipping )

Shippment might be here Monday.....

Here's what it looks like , I'll sort the plywood this weekend....Maybe by then I'll figure out a good place to keep it.

Wood Shipment

Post by planecrazzzy »

Here's the rest of the wood ( plywood )  that was in the shipment....

They all came in 2x4 ft sheets...

Not much wood fer $839 bucks.....But I checked the price....

This stuff is just spendy....

Also , I've noticed that it isn't "ALL" the wood.....

I need to get something to fill the area in the Ribs where it calls for a solid block at the trailing edge....

There's also some "cap stripping" that's needed to "cap" the spars "between" the ribs , for a FLUSH finish between the
Ribs & the front spar.... ( 1/4 "x  1"  ??? )

I don't think the rear spar needs it.....

Here's some pictures of the rest of the wood....

Missing wood

Post by planecrazzzy »

In this picture , you can see the wood ( Missing in ACS Wing Wood Kit ) ....

Look at the "Cap Strip" that is on the Main Spar......it's flush with the ribs , after it's put on between the ribs.....

I'd say that 44 ft of  1/4" x 1" is needed..... That's top & Bottom of the Main Spar.....Both Wings

I guess the other wood ( small blocks / Trailing edge of Rib )  could use something from a local store
