(10) Wheels and Brakes ( Mike )

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Here's what I made to mount my Wheels and Brakes on my 1-1/4" Axles

I took two pieces of chromemoly... and made the pieces separate...

First piece of Chromemoly was 1-3/8" X .058    , it was used to bolt on the Axle and with a washer... push on the Wheel Bearing , to keep the wheel in place....

The next piece of chromemoly was 1-1/2" X .058.... This also bolted to the axle thru the same hole as the other tube.
This piece has a washer welded on it...and there's holes in the washer to mount the brake calipers.

Hey Guys,
On to the next stage... Put the Tire on the wheels...

First of all... I learned that the "RED" dot on the tire , is where you should put the valve stem ( balance )

And... I learned a few things NOT TO DO....... First one I did.... Ruined the HELL outa the tube....

Second one... I still screwed it up even thou I put something to hold the tube back.... it still took a small chunk out of it.

Here's some pictures of that mess...

Hey Guys,
Hope you had a good laugh at that last post.... OK ... 1 week later... and $80 bucks less in the wallet...

Let's see if we can do this without screwing it up....

This time I spent more time on the plastic insert.... fits great... I took a lighter and went around it taking off the sharp
edges from cutting it....

Another thing I did.... The Big "All thread" I used to squeeze the tire together... WAS STILL USED....  "BUT"

I didn't "Wrench" it down.... I'd push the tire in... and tighten it by hand... and repeat.... this way I could FEEL if the tube
was getting in between the rims that were coming together....

First tire went smooth.... I did the second tire.... Went to air it.... and a puff of powder came from between the rims...

My Jaw dropped.... NO!!!!!!! it can't be.... I was real carefull....

Apparently... When I went to air it... it wasn't all the way on the valve stem... and air shot along side it.....

False alarm.... it took air.... What a relief !!!

How did you decide on these brakes, wheels and tires?  Also can you list what they are and your sources?  I am impressed with your contributions to this website.
I am thinking about ordering a set of plans for the Buttercup as this project looks great.  Keep up the great posting you hav been doing.

Matco and Goodyear

Hi Dragger,
Actually, a friend of mine (Kent) found the wheels... I was having a hard time finding a 6.00 X 6 wheel
to fit my  1-1/4" axle.... I thought I was going to have to get 5.00 X 5
As far as picking out the tire.... I wanted a good tire...  This is a 4 ply , 120mph  Goodyear
My Wheels and Disc brakes are Matco... only $432 for both sides.... I also bought the Matco Vertical mount Brake cylinder.

I'm glad you like the Building Log... I'm trying to make that extra effort to help others if they are building the same plane.
I wish "I" could see what others are doing on their Buttercups... But you only get a glimpse here and there...

PS  Ready to set the plane up and do a final check on the Lift Struts before welding them....

Ok...
The pieces were sandblasted and painted with 2 part epoxy primer.
Assembling the brakes.
I ordered my fittings and tubing through Matco , same place I bought the brakes years ago.
The fittings match the tubing ...which match the brakes.
Matco said I could use ATF, Automatic Transmission Fluid instead of MIL-H-5606 for my brake fluid.
NO AUTO BRAKE FLUID...

Hopefully , I won't need to use brakes much...
But those peSky PAVED airports...better be ready
.

PS...The second flight , Brakes were tested. (My first plane)

I bought Brake line and fittings through Matco Brakes.
I figured it matched their system.
.
Yes , I bought 1/4 tube and fittings - But I ended up putting 1/8" tubing and fittings....

Here's why...

Trying to figure out just how the tube was going to be routed... I KINKED a spot....
I thought I would need smaller tubing for tighter bends...( The tubing is fairly stiff )
.
But after "Sleeving the entire length of the small tubing with the 1/4 inch...
It kind of told me 1/4" would have worked if I used the heat gun the first time...
Oh well...Slower flow through a tighter hole gives it a longer "Throw" , better feel
and it has a protective sleeve throughout flexing areas on the landing gear.

So here's the stuff I used...

Something I changed... was the direction coming out of the vertical master cylinders.
I WAS going to have 90 degree fittings pointed upward and hoops by the firewall...
Instead... The shortest side for my "Torsion" roll seems to give it plenty of length to use (especially in the tubing sleeve)
So I used straight fittings at the base.... Clean look and operation , nothing to snag after the lower panel is in place ( With batting )

These are some pictures filling the system with ATF...
Just pump the oil can at the bleeder valve, til oil comes out of the vent at the other end.
Since the plastic lines are clear , it was easy to see oil was moving.
.
After I finished with both sides , I put the oil back into the container..
I was surprised how 'Little" the system used...

I like the 1/8" lines... But I need to make something to protect and strengthen the area around the calipers...(working on it )

Here's things I did to protect the brake line.

I put ANOTHER tube around the brake line , it also adds UV protection
.
I formed a piece of .032 aluminum to do a couple things... One ,protect the small exposed brake line at the fitting.(Deflector shield)
Two...By tying into the curved bulk of brake line...the small line is protected/supported from shock too.
If nothing else... This will at least protect it during building.

Finishing this Brake system means protecting Plastic lines that are aprox 3 inches away from the exhaust pipes.
I knew I'd be coming to this...Just hadn't found the material (that wasn't 37 bucks a square foot)
.
I thought about some material we had left over after installing the wood burning furnace in the new house...Tested it
I was able to shape it easy with a saw blade or rough sanding block...even a rat tail.

"Relieving" areas helps squeeze the panels in place .
After a panel is close to final fit...brushing dabs of grease on the high spots , Then pressing the panel in place,
Shows exactly where to carve.

Sealing the deal...
.
A quick tape job with Aluminum duct stuff, helps seal the area between the panels
This sheds the heat better.
.
Checking the Fit of the outside panel too...(it still needs chaffing tape strip)
.
The only other thing I did was put a piece of Dacron fabric over the hole at the brake cylinders.
It closes the area more to keep debris out.
I held it in place with polybrush
.
Now the brakes can be worked on from inside the cabin,,, The heat shield can be left inplace.
.
This should wrap up this stage...
I put someone in the cockpit to test the brakes as I pushed the fuselage back and forth.
They work good for shop test,,, No leaks,,,
Now let's see if we pass the heat test...
Remember, I use a "Torsion" type of twist on my brake lines.
I'll be inspecting it after the first cooling cycle
