Paint for metal parts

Post by Meatball »

Hi all,

Just wondering what paint everyone used for the metal parts such as flying wire tabs, rudder pedal asssembly, etc. Prime and paint, two in one rustoleum, just paint?

Any other bits of advice?

Thanks!

I am not a painter

So I rattle can only - but for parts that need a better coating, I found a real 2 part epoxy in a rattle can that works really well

Found it in auto parts store,

Details are in the Oratex thread

I wish that I had done the powder coat process before I started painting stuff, i think it is as tuff and not as likely to kill you.

I'm not a painter either, nor do I wish to become one. Rattle can sounds great to me, but which one? Also, when you say for parts that need a better coating, what exactly does that mean?

Thanks!!

Anything out in the weather needs a better coating
Everything you take the powder coat off of
Everything aluminum

Shawn,
I've see that paint but never used any. What is the shelf life after you mix it? I rarely have a project big enough to use a whole can of paint at once. I always assumed I would throw away the majority of it.

Once you push button to mix you have 24 hours

I save up parts till I have a batch, then paint, for less waste. It is a drawback for sure, but if I dont have to clean mixed epoxy out of a spray gun its worth it to me.

It comes in a few diff colors, and it comes as high build for sanding as well.

A tip on those 2 part rattle cans, you can extend the life of them a little bit by putting the can in the refrigerator after use. Keeping it cold slows the chemical reaction somewhat. Added a day or two for me. I have a refrigerator in my shop. YMMV.

Shawn probably doesn't need a refrigerator. He has Alaska.
