Fire Suppression System

Post by EchoWhiskey »

I was reading an old post that described the likely rapid combustion of fiberglass and fabric in an engine fire which got me to thinking.

Has anyone looked into or installed fire suppression?

As I recall there was a discussion on this subject here on the forum a couple of years ago. Designing something effective would be difficult, expensive and heavy. Fire is a scary thing but note that there are thousands of tube and fabric airplanes that have flown for thousands of hours for decades and you don't see very many flaming airplanes falling out of the sky.

I'm considering a simple carbon fiber funnel with the mouth in the cockpit and outlets in the engine compartment. Shut every thing down, stick your fire extinguisher in the mouth and let her rip.

However, that introduces a convenient place for CO and fire to enter the cockpit. Carbon fiber is hardly fireproof as well.

I have not seen a single engine GA airplane with a system, and fire is a low probability if everything is properly put together. You can easily make more problems than you are trying to solve...
