Highlander vs Super Stol

Post by Behindcurve »

Hello all. I am new to this forum and new to building of experimental aircraft. I have yet to purchase an aircraft kit and this will be my first. While researching kit planes, I have came across the Wild West Aircraft upgraded Highlander and the Super stol. I have watched a lot of the videos and read the specs of each aircraft. Both are impressive! I live in Alaska and I feel either aircraft would probably be great with Alaskan off-airport flying.
Even with the upgraded Monster shock suspension and upgraded wings, the Highlander is still less expensive than the Super Stol. (I do have a budget)
I am kinda leaning towards the Yamaha Apex, but not against the Rotax 912.
So my question is, if both were on 29" tires, are there any real preformance differences? Different flying characteristics? Gross wieght handling, landing and take off differences? Vison over cowling? Anything that comes to mind would be appreciated.
I am sure there are a following of both the Highlander and S/S, but would like to hear any comments.

Personally, I can't imagine living in Alaska without having a Highlander on floats .
Both are great planes, but it all comes down to mission profile and what you are willing to spend your hard earned cash on. For the difference in cost, you can have floats, bush wheels, skis, and likely a few other goodies for the Highlander. :)
Either way, no one will be able to wipe the smile off your face! :D

The superstol will land slightly slower/ shorter no matter how you modify.
Will that small difference matter to you?
A big difference for me here in Alaska is wood ribs in the wings. Everything gets wet and stays wet here.

And the biggest difference FOR ME was the safety factor that slats give you. Stall spin is much less likely.

Fly them both they way you will use them before you decide.

John, in your build log webpage, you mentioned forward cg due to heavier viking engine...
how heavy is your viking?
thanks,
