Superstol powerplant options
Aside from the obvious Rotax entries, are there Rotax upgrades or other Powerplant options(yamaha?)to get to 130-140 hp?

EW, Look down at the Wild West Aircraft thread, and you'll See Steve Henry's Yee Haw aircraft 5 & 6. 5 is a Yamaha RX-1, and the 6 is a Yamaha Apex. Here is a thread for an RX-1 re-power

Also there are a few Rotax upgrades available. Ronnie Smith has a big bore, and there are others with turbos. I'm going with the setup for the Apex from Steve Henry.
Cheers,
Bruce

Steve Henry has started his Yeehaw 7 build. It’s another Highlander. He’s going to be installing another Yamaha apex this year, but it will be turbo charged. You can check out the Yamahaf aircraft conversions Facebook group. Edge performance of Norway has received an Apex motor and will work on turbo charging it. They’ve been building turbo chargers for Rotax engines for years. Turbocharged Apex Yamaha will be 200-300hp. Mike

I am liking the http://www.aeromomentum.com Suzuki based Aeromomentum engines. They are heavy compared to Rotax, but it seems like the http://www.aeromomentum.com/am15.html AM15 engine would be a good fit for the XL SuperSTOL airframe.

Re: Superstol powerplant options
Hey guys,
Any concerns using an automotive engine screaming at 5800 / 6000 RPM continuous ??
An average automotive engine lives between idle and 3000 RPM.
Im leaning towards the Titan X340.

Re: Superstol powerplant options
Most auto conversions are too heavy for Ss or Highlander
To answer the question - auto conversion hp rating will be at max rpm
Only use max rpm for takeoff.
If you want the same motor reliability you have in a car, you have to run at the same rpm.
So you must produce enough hp at 2,000 rpm for cruise flight - to get the same engine reliability.
If you are ok with more frequent engine rebuilds then more RPM is OK.

Re: Superstol powerplant options
Edge performance make a really nice Rotax Conversion. They take a 912ULS and put on a Furl Onjector system and a Turbo charger. It puts out something like 156 HP.
