Muffler Trouble

Post by User GDS »

Greetings everybody, I haven't been on the forum for awhile, I've gotten busy building a Zenith 701 for a friend of mine. (interesting plane, I'm guessing it will out-STOL my Highlander, but it's not overbuilt and sturdy like the H. No big rocks or soft stuff for the 701...)

I'm doing the condition inspection on my Highlander (400 hours TT) and found cracks on the inlet to the muffler. It's the Just Aircraft provided muffler that hangs from the exhaust pipes. My local aircraft welder told me a weld repair to the pipe probably would not hold, he recommends cutting the end off of the muffler and replacing that.

Questions:

Has anybody modified the factory muffler to add ball socket joints and spring connections used on most Rotax exhaust systems?

Do I have to go through the factory for service? Who builds these for JA?

Thanks, Gary

I believe the current systems are provided by Sonic Headers http://sonicheaders.com/ up in Minnesota. Todd is at 763-260-0382.

Thanks, I talked to him today, I'm sending my muffler to him to see if it can be repaired.
